George Michael is heading home for Christmas after a remarkable recovery in his battle with pneumonia. Within the next few days the superstar singer is set to be discharged from the hospital in Austria where he has been treated for the past month. And he will head straight for his London home in time to enjoy Christmas Day there.
Medics initially feared the Careless Whisper singer would need to stay in hospital for months. George’s boyfriend Fadi Fawaz has been at the star’s bedside throughout his ordeal. He revealed that the singer, who had hits such as Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go with Wham! before going solo, has been given the all-clear to leave.
Writing on Twitter, Fadi, 38, said: “Christmas at home. I cannot stop smiling today, the best day ever. He is getting better and better. Nothing to worry about, happy days.”
George, 48, was rushed to the private hospital on November 20 after he fell ill at Vienna’s exclusive Imperial Hotel, where he was staying ahead of a concert. He was later diagnosed with severe pneumonia. The star, who has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, was forced to cancel the 14 British gigs that would have made up the final leg of his Symphonica European tour. As well as Fadi keeping a bedside vigil, George’s father Kyriacos Panayiotou, 75, and his sisters Melanie, 49, and Yioda, 53, also flew over to Austria to be with him.
George is set to make his first public appearence outside his home on Friday.
